Background and context

The thread-like elongated filamentous structure found in the nucleus of a cell is made up of nucleic acids and proteins. The chromosomes bear the genes that control all the metabolic processes of a cell and vehicles of transmission from cell to cell and generation to generation. Each chromosome contains two arms namely long arm (q) and short arm (p) joints by the centromere. Each chromosomal arm is further subdivided and denoted by a number.
