Background and context

Greenhouse gases such as CO2, CH4, nitrous oxide, CFCs, etc are essential for keeping the Earth warm and hospitable. These gases are transparent to solar radiations but prevent a substantial part of longwave radiations to escape into space that is emitted by the Earth. An increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases enhances the greenhouse effect and in turn the mean global temperature rises.
