Background and context

On the basis of how distant the light reaches into the water, the ocean is divided into different zones. Each of these zones consists of a distinct group of species which are adapted to the biotic and abiotic conditions specific to that zone. The uppermost region of an ocean is known as the photic zones where most of the aquatic photosynthetic organisms are present, next is the aphotic followed by abyssal and benthic zones. Similarly, horizontally the oceans are divided into three main zones namely; oceanic, neritic and intertidal zone based on their farness from the land.
