Background and context
Caenorhabditis elegans is a small free living wormlike organism belonging to the phylum Nematoda. Since its introduction into the field of biology in the early 1970s it has been used extensively in the field of neural and developmental biology as a model organism. This is the first multicellular organism on which sequencing research was done and its whole genome sequencing completed.
