Background and context

The eggs of amniotes contain 3 extraembryonic membranes, chorion, amnion, and the allantois. The chorion facilitates the exchange of gases. The amnion protects the embryo from external shock as well as provides hydration. The allantois stores the nitrogenous waste produced by the embryo and facilitates respiration. The amniotic cavity is filled with amniotic fluid.
