Background and context

At anaphase I, during cell division or meiosis, homologous chromosomes are randomly dispersed, with segregation and separation occurring independently of one another. This is known as independent assortment, and it results in gametes with unique chromosomal combinations. The genetic material exchange between the non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes during crossing over leads in new gene combinations on each chromosome.
