Background and context

Sponges belong to the Phylum Porifera. Porifera don’t possess true tissues because they do not produce true gastrula during embryogenesis. But they do have specialized cells which can perform specialized functions like tissues. Sponges have a cellular grade of organization and are multicellular. Sponges are sessile animals. Due to the many pores on the body, they are called sponges and act as a filter feeder.
