Background and context
Prokaryotes existed on Earth for billions of years before plants and animals. Prokaryotes are single-celled organisms that do not have a nucleus. They only have a single piece of circular DNA in their nucleoid. They have two different domains- bacteria and archaea. Most prokaryotes have a cell wall outside the boundary of the plasma membrane and may also have some additional structures like capsules, flagella, and pili. Most of the prokaryotes are colonial and prefer to live in communities where interactions normally take place.
