Background and context
The Law of independent assortment is said to be the second law of Mendel's inheritance. It was deduced from the dihybrid cross performed by Mendel. It states that genes assort independently of one another during the process of gametogenesis. As a result of independent assortment, new combinations are formed in the offspring.
