Background and context

Recent inbreeding of crops has led to the decline in the genetic diversity of the plant. This means the genetic diversity of the plant of the variety is lost. This sharp decrease can occur as a result of various conditions like inbreeding and selectively breeding plants. A decline in the variety can reduce the chances of evolution and adaption of the plant against the changing environment around it.
