Background and context

There are main three cell checkpoints that occur during cell division. The first cell checkpoint is the G1 (Gap1) checkpoint that occurs when the G1 phase is completed and before the cell enters the S (synthesis) phase. The second cell checkpoint is the G2 (Gap2) checkpoint that occurs at the end of the G2 phase. The third cell checkpoint is the M (Metaphase) checkpoint which occurs near the end of the metaphase stage and before the start of the anaphase stage.
