Background and context

There are main three cell checkpoints that occur during cell division. The first cell checkpoint is the G₁ (Gap1) checkpoint that occurs when the G₁ phase is completed and before the cell enters the S (synthesis) phase. The second cell checkpoint is the G₂ (Gap2) checkpoint that occurs at the end of the G₂ phase. The third cell checkpoint is the M (Metaphase) checkpoint which occurs near the end of the metaphase stage and before the start of the anaphase stage.
