Background and context

Nitrogen is an essential element in the living cells as it is the building block of protein and nucleic acid, naturally, without it no cell can live. In the air nitrogen is 78%, but this nitrogen is a noble gas and is unreactive. This gaseous form cannot be used directly by plants without undergoing a transformation. Leguminous plants, like soybean, have nodules in their root, where a bacteria named rhizobia reside that can transfer atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia that can be used by the plant.
