Background and context

Reproduction is a process that involves the production of an offspring from an organism (parent). Reproduction is essential for the survival of a species. Organisms can reproduce asexually to produce genetically identical offspring or sexually to produce genetically variable offspring. Sexual reproduction does not necessarily mean that male and female gametes from different individuals undergo fertilization. Many animals have adopted unique ways to reproduce sexually depending on their physiology.
