Carbohydrates are macromolecules that are an important source of energy for all cells, They also provide support to the structure of all cells of plants, animals, and fungi. Carbohydrates can be classified into monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. 

Disaccharides are carbohydrates formed when two monosaccharides are joined together by a glycosidic bond. Maltose, lactose, and sucrose are examples of disaccharides.
