Background and context

The parasympathetic pathway and sympathetic pathway are components of the autonomic nervous system. The parasympathetic pathway stimulates activities when the body is at rest. It keeps the body relaxed. The sympathetic pathway is the opposite of the parasympathetic pathway in that it stimulates the body to respond to fight or flight. Acetylcholine is produced in both pathways but norepinephrine is produced only in the sympathetic pathway.
