Background and context
Carbon dioxide is delivered in the blood from tissues to the lungs in 3 ways:
(i) It is soluble in solution.
(ii) buffering with water as carbonic acid, and
(iii) attached to proteins, especially hemoglobin. Roughly 75% of carbon dioxide is transported in red blood cells and 25% in plasma.
