Background and context
All prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have a plasma membrane or cell membrane that separates the contents of a cell from the outside environment. It is made of a phospholipid bilayer that has embedded proteins. The plasma membrane is semi-permeable as it controls the movement of substances and gases into and out of a cell.
