Background and context

Air enters the body through the nostrils and nose in the respiratory system. There are two nasal chambers containing hair and mucus in this nostril. The air in this compartment is filtered and maintained at a temperature that corresponds to the body's temperature. The air next flows via the pharynx, where pathogens are eliminated, before moving on to the larynx and finally the trachea. Mucus filters air once more in the trachea. Finally, two bronchi are formed by an extended form of the trachea, and air passes through each of them on its way to the lung.
