Background and context

All the plants have a characteristic life cycle which consists of two distinct stages :
1. Gametophyte stage - this is the haploid stage that produces the male and female gametes by a process of equal division that is mitosis. 
2. Sporophyte stage - this stage is a diploid stage that is responsible for producing haploid spores by a reductional division that is meiosis. 
All the plants have a life cycle that alternates between these two stages with one stage dominating the other in different types of plants.
