Background and context

The movement of materials inside the cell through the plasma membrane is known as endocytosis. The movement of the material outside the cell is known as exocytosis. A vesicle is pinched off from the plasma membrane and it is internalized in the vesicle as it moves across the plasma membrane. The plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer that surrounds the plant and animal cells. It is embedded with several proteins, carbohydrates, glycolipids, and glycoproteins. The plasma membrane is selectively permeable in the sense that it allows the entry and exit of specific molecules in and out of the cell.
