Background and context
Single-celled organisms like bacteria are called prokaryotes. They lack membrane-bound cell organelles but they have a plasma membrane, the genetic material that is not enclosed within a membrane, ribosomes, and cytoplasm. Bacterial cells have cell walls that are made of peptidoglycan. The cells are also sometimes enclosed within capsules.
