Background and context

Osmosis is the transport of water as per the concentration gradient across the semipermeable membrane. The concentration gradient is present according to the dissolved solutes, which cannot pass through the membrane. The aquaporins are capable of facilitating the movement of water that help in osmosis. This occurs mostly in red blood cells as well as in the membranes of kidney tubules.
