Background and context

The electron transport chain is the final stage of aerobic respiration. The electron transport chain involves the acceptance of electrons from NADH and FADH2 and then transfers them to the final electron acceptor, oxygen through a chain of electron acceptor complexes. A total of four complexes comprises the electron transport chain.
