Background and context

Fertilization is a process in which the male gamete fuses with the female gamete to produce offspring. In plants and animals, fertilization is necessary for the continuation of life on the planet. Plants, especially angiosperms have evolved with the mechanism called double fertilization. In this mechanism, one sperm cell fuses with the egg, this process is called true fertilization and the other sperm cell fuses with the two polar nuclei of the ovary, hence the name double fertilization.
