Vessel lumen: space inside the blood vessel. Usually need a hcp order for application of heat therapy. Use of whirlpool baths or hot tubs often relieves the tired and sore muscles. The local effects of heat and cold applicants impact the body"s cutaneous layers, including the underlying subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and vascular structures. Systemic effects of heat and cold involve more than just one specific area and can affect all body systems. Vasodilation: increase in size of the cavity or space inside the blood vessel. Allowing for an increased flow of oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood to the site. Pores in the capillary walls become more permeable (open wider) Allows increased passage of plasma, oxygen-carrying rbcs, nutrients, and wbcs from the capillaries into the interstitial spaces (the spaces between cells) and to the cells. Reduction of edema once it has stabilized. Edema: swelling that occurs when excessive fluid leaves the vascular system and remains in the interstitial spaces.
