Lecture : MEDICAL_TODAY_ TYPES OF PNEUMONIA_FOR_ALL_LEARNERS
Document Summary
Parents can never be too careful with their little one"s cough and cold. Though respiratory tract infections are common in children, these infections can occasionally develop into pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs), the single largest cause of death in children worldwide, says the world health organization. Every year, it kills about 1. 8 million children under the age of 5 years. Yet it can be prevented with simple interventions, and treated with low-cost, low- tech medication, and care. If your child has pneumonia, the signs of the disease and the symptoms he will experience will depend on his age, type of bacterium or virus causing the pneumonia, and the severity of the infection. Your doctor can make the diagnosis of pneumonia based on your child"s symptoms, physical examination, and chest x-ray results. The most common type of bacterium responsible for bacterial pneumonia in children is streptococcus pneumoniae (or pneumococcus).
