International prevention of collision at sea regulations
The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972
(COLREGs) are published by the International Maritime Organization
(IMO) and set out, among other things, the "rules of the road" or
navigation rules to be followed by ships and other vessels at sea to
prevent collisions between two or more vessels.

1. Avoid ship channels where possible, or cross them quickly.
2. Be alert: Watch for ship traffic.
3. Think before you drink! ...

5. Know whistle signals: Five or more mean danger.
6. Use radio channel 13 for bridge-to-bridge communication.

What are the causes of ship collision?
Human error is the most common cause of maritime collisions.
Weather: Next to human error, weather conditions have the biggest
impact on maritime accidents. Fog obstructing vision, high winds exerting
force on vessels, ice flows colliding with vessels all fall under this category.
How many seconds is the durations of a short blast?
short blast--A blast of about a one second duration. prolonged blast--A
blast of from four to six seconds' duration.

Three Short Blasts - This means you are operating in astern propulsion,
for example backing away from a dock. One Prolonged Blast
+Three Short Blasts This is technically two different signals in
succession. One prolonged blast indicates you are getting under way,
and three short blasts indicate you are backing up.
