ME 4012 Lecture Notes - Camshaft, Internal Combustion Engine, Cylinder Head
Document Summary
Injectors are typically used in compression ignition engines. It sprays the gasoline into the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke. It is connected to the cylinder head via a bolt: manifold. The manifold"s primary role is to deliver the air- fuel mixture and collect exhaust gases uniformly from all cylinders. Two manifolds are used in an internal combustion engine, one for intake and one for exhaust: cams and camshaft. Camshafts are used in ic engines to regulate the opening and shutting of valves. The inlet valve should open at the end of the exhaust stroke and close at the end of the intake stroke to provide proper engine output. Thus, a cam is used to adjust its timing. The cam is oval and applies pressure on the valve to open and release pressure to close. It is powered by the timing belt, which is in turn driven by the crankshaft.
