PSYCH 100 Lecture 6: Section 2 Attachment
Document Summary
Attachment- the emotional bond between an infant and the primary caregiver. Forms in first 6 months, this time is crucial. The scenario where a mother and child are placed in an unknown room with toys and it is a favorable environment but just not known to the child. The child is allowed to play in the room, interacting with the mother. Then a stranger enters the room and eventually the mother leaves and the stranger goes to comfort usually with no effect. When the mother comes back, it is called the reunion and it is important. The difference between secure and insecure is mainly determined during those 6 months of the attachment forming. Child uses a caregiver as a secure base. Wary of a stranger but still calm. During reunion, the child is calmed easily. Willing to explore environment but doesn"t rely on mom as a base. Little reaction when mom leaves or returns.
