Spinal Cord PPT
Spinal cord is a segmented structure
Repeated subunits; one for each vertebra (plus 1)
Each segment is largely responsible for only things in that region of the body
Generally, the more things in that region, the bigger that segment of the cord
Extends from base of skull to L1
Note that below L1, the things inside the vertebrae are individual nerves, not a unified
spinal cord
The “wiring” consists of axons that are bundled together into different sized groupings
-axons to and from the brain are initially bundled into the spinal cord
-At numerous set positions along the cord smaller bundles of axons leave the cord as
nerves which exit between vertebrae
The meningeal wrapping extends out along the exiting nerves to just beyond the vertebra
-At this point, the meninges merge into the general connective tissue sheath around all
nerves
-Dura, Arachnoid, Pia
Gray matter- neurons and information processing (same as brain)
Posterior gray horn is sensory processing
Anterior gray horn is muscle command processing
White matter- communication cables (shell along length)

Document Summary

Repeated subunits; one for each vertebra (plus 1) Each segment is largely responsible for only things in that region of the body. Generally, the more things in that region, the bigger that segment of the cord. Note that below l1, the things inside the vertebrae are individual nerves, not a unified spinal cord. The wiring consists of axons that are bundled together into different sized groupings axons to and from the brain are initially bundled into the spinal cord. At numerous set positions along the cord smaller bundles of axons leave the cord as nerves which exit between vertebrae. The meningeal wrapping extends out along the exiting nerves to just beyond the vertebra. At this point, the meninges merge into the general connective tissue sheath around all nerves. Gray matter- neurons and information processing (same as brain) Anterior gray horn is muscle command processing. Neurons in the spinal cord send information to the brain, spinal cord is the middle man.
