PSY-2700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Hand Washing, Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
Spontaneous recovery- anxiety producing conditions: child whose been bitten by a dog lost anxiety but then returns after dog growls again; want anxiety and fear to resurface so you can work on it through stages. Conditioning of the 2nd order- takes longer and its weaker. Stimulus generalization- dog will same bark to a tone that"s one below normal. Whenever the dog is on the right side of a field a light comes on and ten seconds later the right side of the field is shocked. Now when the light turns on the dog jumps to the left side. Even after 200 trials dogs still jumped to the left side. First conditioned response is more powerful than following situations. Aversion- trying to stop the behavior exposed to stimulus with some discomfort. Covert sensitization- imagining poo as chocolate icing to avoid eating it. Implosion- with hand washing imagine entering really dirty bathroom but trying to relax the client; less stressful than aversion.
