Determining if it"s worthwhile to listen to for audience. Personal inventory: what you really care about in order to think of possible topics- must be meaningful to you/audience. Accuracy, objectivity (perception of honesty in diverse points of view) General purpose- speaker"s ultimate goal to gain audience, understanding, change minds, win agreements, motivate or reinforce beliefs. Specific purpose- how the speaker wants the audience to respond serves to direct research/conduct speech. Embodies idea you want audience to get. A genre of speech originated during classical period and referred to by the following titles: display, ceremonial, festive. Intro, tribute, awards, inspiration, after dinner: subject matter is praise or blame, stress communal values, audience identifies with speaker through identification, artistic language, sense of purpose or future direction. Involves: remembering the past; honoring heroes; celebrating shared beliefs/values; offering inspiration/encouragement; welcome/farewell; presentation/acceptance; commencement; tributes/eulogies; inaugural/keynote; dinner sermons.
