Goals of therapy: alleviate patients pain asap until cause is treated. Helps judge severity of pain & intervention that needs to be taken. Choose medication & route according to severity of pain. Nsaid > acetaminophen; iv administration has quicker onset. For mild to moderate pain (<7), initiate non-opioid analgesic (acetaminophen/nsaid) Acetaminophen has less side effects, but less effective & no-inflammatory action. Acetaminophen can be used w/nsaids for addictive analgesic effect. Nsaid: effective for mild to moderate pain. Chronic use associated with gi effects (ulcer, bleeding) & renal failure.
