Week 3 - legal research: briefing a case. It will expose you to some of the tasks you will face in law school. It helps you understand how legal actors make decisions. It will familiarize you with some aspects of law. What it teaches us: how to identify the most important information, how to write concisely, helps to develop analysis skills, skills useful in working world. Introduction: what is a case brief, start with the case, reported decisions, outline the reported decision, first read through, outline the case brief, finishing up. Case brief: one of the first assignments law students are given. Law students are encouraged to go through secondary sources (i. e. ) journals, articles: students would go to the library catalogue and run a search on the topic they are interested in. Starting with the case: case comments explain why the case is important, pairing case with case comment helps with understanding.
