Classical criminology: rational choice, crime attractive if low work = high payoff (less effort, control = fear of punishment, measures, certain, swift punishment (keep people from committing crimes) Determine if a criminal based on physical features. Consider environments, social forces- not just individual or biological factors. Functionalism: anomie = normlessness (norms confused, unclear, absent) = crime. If you"re in a state of anomie you"re more likely to commit a crime. Illegitimate opportunity theory (extension of strain theory) cloward and ohlin. Learn to be a criminal by being embedded in a criminal environment. Embraces criminality and teaches you how to be a criminal. Laws privilege certain groups, protect affluent and powerful , not neutral (criminogenic environment, breeding criminal behaviour)
