Lecture 21: are the oceans limitless: humans first thought that the ocean was limitless in resources. The oceans are being emptied, starting with overfishing of large whales. Newfoundland depends on their fisheries for jobs, resources and income, so people very upset: the average size of a cod was 1m for 1000 years, and within a few decades the size dropped to 20cm on average. Large predatory fish, such as tuna had good fishing success in 1952, and this was confined in the western pacific. In 1958 the fishing practice spread out to the indian ocean and worldwide, finding new areas of very good fishing catch rates. In 1964 it spread out even more, but only we"re only getting half the catch rates we started off it. Bio205 the beginning, and when it"s close to the carrying capacity, growth slows down. So we want to catch fish at msy - keep population at half of its carrying capacity.
