Document Summary

Feral horses broke out of their stables and started breeding here, and no horses left the area since then so it"s a very isolated population. Seals also live there, including harbour seals and gray seals. In the last few years, the grey seal population on sable island increased dramatically. Researchers counted the seal population using various methods. Incomplete tagging is when they know they didn"t tag all the organisms, while complete tagging is all of them to get a more accurate population size number. N (t) = the population size at a specific point in time t = time period. N(0) = initial population size r = instantaneous growth rate; the maximum growth rate for each individual: when considering an exponential growth curve, most of the population will grow towards the end. Due to limited resources the population levels fell drastically (almost back to the initial population size) about 10 years later. Bio205: this shows that exponential growth isn"t realistic.
