Excessive, elaborate, grand, flamboyant music (a lot of ornamentation that began in the visual arts with bold colours and flowed into music with bold sounds) Architecture: construction on the grandest scale (st. peters in rome), space filled with excessive and abundant decoration by carvers, sculptors, and painters. Music: composed for these vast grand spaces and growing orchestras (king louis xiv sometimes has orchestras with 80+ players) Love of energetic detail within a large scale composition. Highly ornamented melody above a solid chordal base to balance out the melody (contrast) Art: large colourful paintings, overtly dramatic, pure shock by presenting gruesome events from history or myth in a dramatic way- this translates over to music. ****doctrine of affections: different musical moods could and should be used to influence the emotions of the listener. Drama of the stage joined with music to form opera (introduction of many other new genres- cantata, oratorio (types of operas), sonata, concerto, suite)
