Document Summary

Plato understood leisure as only being able to be obtained through a good society and order, and only for those under the category of rulers. Rulers as described as the philosophers and kings, whereas the rest of the society supported these rulers under the categories of auxiliaries and industrialists. A good society, according to plato, is one where the rulers make decisions based of of reason and their wisdom. Aristotle agreed with plato on his idea of having a good society to allow for leisure, but aristotle founded the rules of our understanding of leisure: ~ work and leisure: both are required in the society, but leisure is higher than work. ~ rest and recreaion: both are necessary to prepare oneself to go back to work. These do not have the same value as leisure, they are less. Play is also in this category, but this and recreaion are only used unil you are restored.
