Levels of consciousness: higher level: controlled awareness, strict definition, lower level: automatic responses (eq. Driving), daydreaming: altered states of consciousness: drugs, trauma, fatigue, possibly hypnosis, subconscious awareness: sleeping and daydreaming eg. priming effects, much sensory info we encounter, no awareness: knocked out, anesthetized. Our capacity for consciousness is limited: how many times did you rub your head and pat your tummy . Consciousness is the ultimate subjective measure: its not an objective version of reality. Image in retina is 2d but perceive world in 3d: goal of conscious access isn"t truth, but usefulness harder to randomly see gorilla then umbrella. Inattentional blindness vs. change blindness: a failure to perceive an event when attention is diverted elsewhere.
