Document Summary

Sun: 600 km/s: if mass is large enough the escape velocity = speed of light. Space-time curvature: assume flat 2d space, place sun on this sheet. History of black holes: first proposed in 1783 - john mitchell. Based on the idea of escape velocity. A way of finding them: look for a star orbiting a dark place: idea proposed again in 1916 karl schwarzschild, proposed again in 1967 john wheeler. Singularity: the mass in a black hole has collapsed (or been compressed to) to an infinitely small size, basically, even though the mass not changed it becomes collapsed to this infinitely small size. So it"s infinitely small you could hold it in your hand, but it"s super heavy (weird feature of qm) Event horizon: event horizon also known as schwarzschild radius, a radius associated with a black hole, a place where light cannot escape.
