Belief systems socially type certain people/behaviours as deviant. Religion/science has power to deviantize groups of people + individuals. Comparing religions or which holds more truth. Religion: evaluate religions role in society, how religion is socially constructed. Deviant acts: occurring within accepted religious groups, abuse of children by religious leaders. Deviant groups: whole religious groups that are socially typed as defiant. Depends on what category it is assigned to. The less integrated into society more likely deviant. Regardless of freedom of religion for citizens. Large established religious groups with long histories. World religions: christianity, islam, judaism, buddhism, hinduism. Less established + less following than church. More negatively viewed more negative oppositional reaction. Trying to control group makes things worst. When a deviantized group becomes more extreme. As a response to hostilities or social control efforts from outsiders.
