PSYC 2001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Empiricism, Feeling
Document Summary
Science is often looked at as something entirely different than other things in the world: science is different but it"s not radically different that other faculties. Method of intuition/tenacity: gut feeling potentially without a logical reason, built into our systems/culturally into our systems - telling us the answer. We never bothered to ask if it"s a right or wrong feeling - we just accept it. Physical appearances are always grouped together before other attributes. Worst way to group things but humans group them that way: folk psychology/theory of mind. The idea that every member of a group, or a class of objects in the world, has a defining set of qualities is referred to as essentialism. Doctors dress like doctors, lawyers dress like lawyers, etc. o. Demonstrates that people in one group believe that their group is the best and are more likely to like others in other groups: nativist/innate.
