CRCJ 3001 Lecture Notes - Crystallization, From Chaos, Centrality
Document Summary
The seductions of crime: moral and sensual atractions in doing evil. Researching affect : evidence of what it means, feels, sounds, tastes or looks like to commit a particular crime. Violence is emotive: we have failed previously to adequately explain it. Motivational theories aren"t really about the act of violence; katz wants to analyze the micro-dynamics of the acts themselves: need to look at the moment itself. Katz: "whatever the relevance of antecedent events and contemporaneous social conditions, something causally essential happens in the very moments in which a crime is committed. The assailant must sense, then and there, a distinctive constraint or seductive appeal that he did not sense a little while before in a substantially similar place. Although his economic status, peer group relations, oedipal conflicts, genetic makeup, internalized machismo, history of child abuse, and the like remain the same, he must suddenly become propelled to commit the crime.
