Monophyletic group and largest group of fungi. Ascus a microscopic sexual structure in which non motile spores are formed. This is where haploid spores are formed through mitosis. Most species in the class produce cleistothecia= glucose fruit body. Blue green molds (molds that grow hyphae) Saprotrophic= chem digest decaying organic matter for nutrition. Disease causing in both humans and sea fans. Conidiophores translucent or slightly brown at the terminal end of the long, smooth walled stripes. Texture: lanose, velutinous, (wooly, silky hair) this is due to the long stripes. Also in hay, cotton, wheat, diary products, can be in food contaminate, indoors and outdoors. Sea fan gorgonia ventalina infected by a. sydowii. Caused epizootic epidemic in the 1990"s caribbean marine environment. Origins of pathogen unclear as it is a soil microorganism. Thought to be due to land runoff into surrounding marine waters.
