Document Summary

Artificial selection was first applied genetic technique; used to purposely control the choice of parents for the next generation. Domestication of plants and animals was a key transition in human civilization e. g. domestication of dogs from wolves and rice, wheat, barley, lentils and dates from weed-like plants. Confusion about why some traits existed in 1 generation but not in the 2 nd etc. Inherited features of offspring are contributed mainly by 1 parent (homunculus inside sperm looks like fetus is crouched inside head of sperm) Parental traits become mixed and changed in the offspring (thought it was blended inheritance ) like paint. However, neither idea could explain why some traits would appear in 1 gen. disappear in another and then reappear again. Explains why 2 black labs can produce black, gold and brown puppies (variation) Pure breeding lines of peas cross fertilization or self fertilization. Large numbers of progeny produced therefore can see trends.
